The final stage in H.S.H. Prince Albert II’s journey of remembrance, following in the footsteps of his great-great-grandfather, Albert I, took the Prince and His delegation to the Spanish region of Cantabria, and specifically to the area of Puente Viesgo. In his day, Albert I led and supported research into prehistory in this region, working closely with Pastor Obermeier.

Report on Madrid

Saturday 15 October marked the third stage in the trip, with a visit to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid. Several speeches recalled the political, emotional and scientific links that Prince Albert I had with Spain, including his expeditions off the coast of Galicia (study of sardine fishing), his friendship with Alfonso XIII, his involvement in the various learned societies in Madrid, his role in the establishment of the International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea (CIESM) in 1919 and his cooperation and friendship with the great oceanographer Odón de Buen.

Report on Lisbon

The official opening of the exhibition “The oceanographer friend. Albert I of Monaco and Portugal, 1873–1920” aroused the interest of the various authorities who attended, and was also covered extensively by the media in Portugal. The exhibition can be visited at the Museu de Marinha (Navy Museum) in Lisbon until 18 December.

The trip to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island aroused great interest among locals, serving as a reminder of the official opening of Avenue Albert I in 1904. The welcome received from the island authorities, the regional government and the town council was outstandingly warm.
