Visit to the Balzi Rossi caves and Museum of Prehistory in Grimaldi, Italy, organised by the Institute of Human Palaeontology, the Monaco Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology and the Grimaldi Museum of Prehistory as part of the Albert I centenary commemorations.

On Thursday 10 February, as part of the Albert I centenary commemorations and following on from the symposium held at Monaco’s Vocational and Catering School, a visit to the Balzi Rossi caves and Museum of Prehistory in Grimaldi, Italy, was organised by Professor Henry de Lumley (President of the Institute of Human Palaeontology), his wife Marie-Antoinette de Lumley, Elena Rossoni-Notter (Director of the Monaco Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology) and Antonella Traverso (Director of the Grimaldi Museum of Prehistory).

In a stunning setting and with numerous Italian, Monegasque and French dignitaries in attendance, the experts provided commentary and context for the pioneering activities of Prince Albert I, who initiated essential work and supported new ideas in prehistory, at the site which brings together the Prince’s Cave, Barma Grande, Caviglione Cave, Mochi Rock Shelter, Prince Florestan’s Cave and the Cave of the Children.
