Starting in June 1898, the Prince regularly attended Kiel Week (held since 1892) though he did not take part in the regattas, for which his yacht was not designed.
An opportunity is provided for the Prince and Wilhelm II to meet. The Prince liked the Emperor and was keen to take advantage of the informal atmosphere at the meeting to engage in parallel diplomacy and facilitate a rapprochement between France and Germany.
H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince Albert II will visit Kiel in June 2021 to commemorate the role played by Prince Albert I.
