Saturday 15 October marked the third stage in the trip, with a visit to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid. Several speeches recalled the political, emotional and scientific links that Prince Albert I had with Spain, including his expeditions off the coast of Galicia (study of sardine fishing), his friendship with Alfonso XIII, his involvement in the various learned societies in Madrid, his role in the establishment of the International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea (CIESM) in 1919 and his cooperation and friendship with the great oceanographer Odón de Buen.

A plaque paying tribute to the work of Prince Albert I, created by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, was unveiled by H.S.H. Prince Albert II.
